Whilst we were waiting for the Sandakan Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to open this orangutan retuned from the wild, climbed upon the roof of the centre and gave birth, using the seclusion of the roof as her nest. Whilst not my best photograph I’ve ever taken it is perhaps the most emotional. This picture shows mum holding up her new born (less than 5 minutes old) to show the vet who has just climbed up to see her. The baby is still joined to the mother by the cord you can see over her right arm. Mum and baby are both well and will be released together back into the wild within one week.
